Sometimes I like them on beds and sometimes I like them as bomb dresses. I can’t help feel that by refashioning the fabric into clothing, that I’m behaving just like asshole who rips down beautiful old barns only to make headboards for rich people. I scored this bedspread at Goodwill today for $2.99. After months of drooling over this yellow dress, it was meant to be. Sorry vintage bedspread lovers, this one is getting repurposed. Abbyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06927460984085545745noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3112297779189625901.post-89019110080749909892012-08-21T13:39:00.000-07:002012-08-21T13:39:21.011-07:00YinAfter weeks of illness & crazy moving, things are finally starting to calm down. I still have a little bit of a cough, but not enough to scare people off of their mats so I decided to attend a class at Bliss Flow last night. Part of my teacher training requires a minimum of two classes taught by BF Master Teachers and unfortunately my schedule only allows for two classes a week. One of the classes is Yin Yoga. Last night I attended that particular class and had my first experience with Yin. I didn’t really know what to expect so I was glad that Marta (the instructor) explained a little bit at the beginning of class. Basically it was fairly easy stretchy stuff but holy crap; they make you hold your poses for what feels like 20 minutes! Really, though it was like 3 minutes each. I really struggled with a few poses. Not so much getting into them, but holding them. Towards the end of the 3 minutes I would get very antsy and keep repositioning myself. I focused on my Ujjayi breath (yes I just googled the spelling-looks like I won’t be graduating anytime soon) to help me through it, but boy oh boy sometimes that didn’t even help.
On the flip side I was able to go really deep into some of the stretches. Deeper than I’ve been able to go since I was in the 6th grade! The Ujjay breathing (that one was from memory) really did help. With about every other exhale I was able to go deeper without killing myself. Imagine my total surprise when three quarters of the way thru my seated forward bend I felt my forehead graze my kneecaps! All in all, it was a good “first day back” class. Nothing too crazy, and it felt good with the right amount of painAbbyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06927460984085545745noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3112297779189625901.post-31663632341908866482012-06-21T08:16:00.001-07:002012-06-21T08:16:19.888-07:00

I've been away a long time. Things are always busy around here and my sewing has just fallen to they wayside right now. I've made a few little things here & there, but nothing worth reporting.

My cousin Christopher got married a few weeks ago in Chicagoland. I'm constantly low on funds (I would rather save up & travel) but I felt I needed to keep up with the big city folk, strictly style speaking of course. No $$ for a fancy new outfit and everything in my closet just seems blah or just too dang vintage & crazy for a wedding. So I decided to whip something up. I've been sitting on this bug fabric forever just waiting for the right pattern to come along.

Then I stumbled upon Simplicity 2444 which seemed simple enough. A classic design that got great reviews. This was my first time working with pleats AND darts in the same dress without an aunt of friend helping me along. I made the top portion out of a simple muslin so I could make sure it all fit ok. All seemed ok, so I just used it as a liner for actual top portion of the dress. Why is it when the "draft" version fits perfectly, the finished portion never does? It was WAY to big and weird in the back. I tried to fix it by adding some badly sewn darts in the upper portion. Still no luck, so I had a co-worker pin up the straps a little. This resulting in a higher than anticipated neckline, but it turned out alright. Still a little big but workable. I added a belt and that seemed to help.

I think the best part of this process, was using a vintage hem marker. All you need is a friend, some pins and about 5 minutes. My friend (who is a skilled tattoo artist / shop owner by trade) enthusiastically volunteered to help. "You're never to old to learn a new skill" he said. I think he is right, it turned out perfectly. Thanks for your help Vinnie!
Not only do they make me feel secretly cute & young, they make the Wisconsin winters more bearable while wearing a dress! Not to mention you don't have to worry about being so dam lady like all of the time. If I find myself sitting cross legged on a bar stool I'm not exactly showing off my business, if you know what I mean. I wear them high on my waist while i'm at work so they don't peek out. I'm not sure that it would matter, but I get enough funny looks as it is.

I'm not really a prairie dress sort of girl, but if it feels comfy, is made from natural fabrics, is somewhat flattering and doesn't make me itch, I'm pretty much game for anything.

I use to have a simply lovely prairie dress (circa 1970's) that I wore thin during the summer months. I stopped wearing it because the boyfriend I had at the time (and his friends) gave me shit for it constantly. Why the hell did I listen to them? Further more why the hell were they all so concerned about what I had on my back? People don't make any sense sometimes. And that guy was dumb anyway. Two words: Parliament cigarettes. That's all I have to say about him.

Back to the subject at hand. I've started cranking out my own line of these lovely "unmentionables" so stay tuned. Just out of muslin, scrap & cheap lace for now. My goal is to someday get my hands on some Belgium linen for a decent price. Is it pathetic that I scour the discount section at Restoration Hardware just to find some sheets to rip up and turn into underwear?
Found the pattern online for free. The top is too tight and needs to be fixed. (I'll have to take the liner out-dam!). The muslin fit perfectly, but the finished product doesn't let me breathe.
Over the last few months i've been stuck in an on again-off again battle with my health. I've gained a ton of weight because of this; or maybe it's the other way around. Now i'm stuck at home with the Flu & Pneumonia. I've got a million designs in my head and I really want to get busy sewing. In the meantime though, I need to get healthy. I need to get back into shape. I need to start eating less and exercising more. I need to breathe deeply and stand up straight again.Abbyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06927460984085545745noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3112297779189625901.post-28387460811199977222010-10-21T15:53:00.000-07:002010-10-21T15:53:48.811-07:00Very sick at home.Stuck at home with the flu & pneumonia... favorite things today
It's busy busy busy around here as I get ready for several upcoming art/craft shows. Gemutlichkeit Days is a german festival held in my hometown every year, and with it comes a two day craft fair. It's a wonderful event that allows my cousins & I to dress up in german costumes and drink beer in the street all weekend. What more could you ask for?? The craft fair section is between two beer gardens, so by staying put in my craft fair booth I can watch all of my hometown go by. I get to see and talk to everyone and show off my wears. My cousins make sure to keep me well stocked with beverages all weekend, and my granny delivers spaetzle & real german potato salad.

There are fall festivals almost every weekend throughout September & October, and i'm signed up for most of them. Unfortunately this leaves me very little time for my brand spanking new sewing machine. I had hoped to make a dirndl (german outfit) for this year, but I just don't think i'll have the time. Oh well, there is always next year!

This is what i'm working right now. They are little pins & hair barrettes made from Yo-Yo's. I plan on making a whole bucket full. The nice thing about these is that they are made from scrap fabric and don't take up a lot of space. I can sit and work on these over my lunch hour. Today it was warm & sunny so I sat out on the upstairs front porch and worked on some. This is the time of year where people start asking if I have Halloween stuff, so here goes... I haven't yet decided on a price yet. What do people pay for hair accessories?

Also in the Yo-Yo mix are my necklaces, which people always seem interested in, but rarely purchase. I'm still deciding if it's worth making Halloween themed ones.

On a complete side note, I discovered how to make Lassi today (classic indian yogurt drink). It's pretty dang simple and shockingly somewhat healthy. A few years ago, my granny got us all Magic Bullet Blenders for Christmas. I use mine a lot for making soups & pestos n things. Today I was making some sweet potato & german butterball bisque and as I was washing out the bullet, I remembered that you can also make smoothies with it. So upstairs I went to google some lassi recipes.

It's basically plain yogurt & fruit blended together with a pinch of cinnamon (some recipes add sugar or cardamom- My friend Morgan would probably add a pinch of salt). This year my dad's cherry trees were loaded to the gills, and I ended up freezing a lot of the cherries. So, all I did was cut up about 6 or 7 frozen cherries, which turned out to be easier and less messy than fresh cherries. Threw them in my little magic blender with a heaping cup of plain yogurt, added a pinch of cinnamon and YUM! Perfect!
If all goes according to plan it will be mine, mine, MINE, MINE before the week is through. I’ve been saving for months and I’m so excited I can hardly stand it! I intend to make this my first project. It’s an out of print pattern I found online for $4.99. I have some very special fabric in mind, but I’m going to make the “practice dress” out of an old bed sheet first. I’ll post photos throughout my journey, wish me luck!

Here are some examples of dresses others have made out of this pattern (Butterick 5315)
Not the itchy pretty lace (English?) but more of a crocheted lace. As I clapped my hands in excitement I thought "oooooh what could I make out of this??!!” Then she proceeded to tell me about how it was her mother's and she has a hard time getting rid of things her mother had given her (her mother is deceased). She explained that it was stained and assured me I could do what I wanted with it, she just didn’t want to throw it away.

When I look at old stained tablecloths, my mind spins in circles with a hundred questions. How did those stains get there? Whose was it and how did it happen? What were they doing (and could I have that dress?). What were they talking about? What was going on in their lives and what was the conversation like when this stain happened or that.
Should I try to wash the stains out and add it to the drawer full of table linens that I don’t use? Or should I cut it up and make something completely adorable. I do need an all purpose petticoat/slip. It seemed easy enough and well, it was free. I had picked up a bolt of vintage corduroy fruit fabric while thrifting with cousin Lauren on her birthday earlier this year, and couldn’t wait to use it. It has blue watermelons and other “Strange Fruit” all over it AND I got about 8 yards for four bucks!! The original pattern has a ruffle that sort of crosses the front in a swirly sort of way and has options for sleeves. At the time I was working with a VERY old, VERY basic machine so I decided to keep it a simple summer dress. You know because simple summer dresses are made out of heavy corduroy (face-palm). I used the “remnant” end that was sort of dirty so I wouldn’t feel so bad if the dress turned out a total failure. Not bad for a first try, even if it is a little tight. I made a test-dress out of muslin and it was HUGE so I changed the seam allowance when I made the corduroy dress. Note to self: Don’t do that again (unless making the piece out of fabric that is similar to muslin-corduroy is NOT). Then to add insult to injury I left it in the dryer too long and shrunk it (but I got the stains out!).

The second time I tried making the dress I bought some oooober cute brown fabric with little paw prints all over it. The fabric was very light weight and sort of see through, so I decided to line the entire dress. Also, I learned from the fruit dress that I needed a longer bodice to avoid the baby doll look. Of course I decided that I, having no formal training what so ever, should do this my way instead of following the simple instructions. The result? A cute dress that is too short, too tight and too crooked to wear. Being a glass half full type of girl, I like to think that I now have an “incentive” dress. A few months at the gym might make this workable. Worse case scenario, I make a cute petticoat to go under to add some length.
I’m sitting here at my beat up 100+ year old writing desk looking passed the rusty 1880’s Acme claw foot dress form that stands in the corner. I’ve never slept on the sleeping porch, mostly do to the lack of screens but I do try to use the clothes line as much as possible. I have a habit of washing my vintage or “dry clean only” clothes in the sink and hanging them on the line as I’m fortunate enough to have access to the same sleeping porch through my bathroom. I’d like to think it will help my clothes last longer, but I’m not sure if that is just a myth I’ve made up in my head.

Hence why I haven’t used the clothes line or the porch for that matter much this year. Sometimes it’s just easier to move the wet clothes the eight inches to the dryer than haul them up the stairs to the clothes line. It’s funny how moving wet clothes up a flight of stairs seems daunting (when I do happen to think of it). I remember spending hours watching my granny wash her clothes in her old ringer washing machine. Then I’d spend all afternoon running clothes up and down the basement steps (which led directly out to the yard) for her. Since I was too short to reach the line itself, and too weak to carry hampers, she would have big baskets set up on the lawn for me to drop piles of heavy wet clothes into.
